the weekend intensive 6-8 June:
Centering Down

Yoga Sutra III:29: “Concentrated attention on the primordial navel centre brings understanding of all bodily systems.”

In both Western and Eastern traditions the centre of gravity within the pelvis is considered the calibrating keystone for organizing the entire body. Sometimes referred to as the hara, dantien or the deep navel centre, refining the position of the navel centre gives us the ability to both release and contain the energy that moves through the pelvis. Having a strong yet mobile core not only has a powerful physical effect, it also affects us energetically, emotionally and spiritually.

In this intensive we will explore the principle of both energetic and structural core support. A key feature of this intensive will be learning to fluidly release and then activate the support of the “primary” inner core muscles, the psoas, a complex stabilizing muscle that lies parallel to the lower spine and acts as a functional bridge between the vertebral column and the pelvis and legs. We will then learn how to engage the “secondary” inner core muscles; the subtle yet powerful pelvic diaphragm, the deeper girding layers of the abdominal wall and the stabilizing muscles of the lower back. These all serve to protect and support the sacroiliac joint, lower back and spine. To support a fuller understanding of the complex relationship between inner core muscles Donna will present new anatomical Powerpoint presentations. Participants will also receive a Gertie ball and extensive digital hand-outs with many of the exercises.

A particular emphasis of this workshop will be using the practice of yama or “restraint” as a way of bringing our fullest attention to stability within both the body and mind. Stability is then used as the prerequisite condition from which to expand and a stable reference point to which we can return. The mindful practice of yama serves to develop a sense of calmness in the nervous system and steadiness of the mind and heart.

Expect to come away from this intensive with LOTS of valuable, practical and easy-to-apply techniques that can be used in daily practice.

There is no partial attendance for this weekend intensive.

one-day intensive 9 June:

Sequential Flow - Origins of Alignment

Through learning to initiate impulse from the ground and allowing this force to move unimpeded, we rediscover the organic origins of asana and its intimate relationship to the oceanic flow of the breath. As we learn how to use the ground as a springboard for movement, we begin the process of sending force clearly through the structure of the body, while keeping the joint spaces open and fluid. The ability to intelligently sequence force through the body is the foundation of what we call “alignment”; alignment of the structure of the body; alignment of the energetic pathways that support the movement of prana and breath and an ultimate alignment of the human being in relationship to ground, gravity and space. This cyclic flow through the body is constricted when asana practice is practiced in a static and willful manner. To liberate the movement of impulse through the body involves engaging and inhabiting the fluids systems, learning to allow rather than to impede, and have a receptive mind.

This intensive will begin with a fluid warm-up followed by a guided developmental movement inquiry. Drawing on our experience we will apply these skills to the practice of slow and gentle vinyasana, using some dyad work to check the clarity of each other’s alignment. In the afternoon class we will explore these principles in simple inversions as well as seated forward bends and twists.

one-day intensive 10 June:

Containment & Contentment - Exploring the Inner World of the Organ Body

In this one day intensive we will explore the relationship between the heart, lungs and diaphragm and the outer container of the body wall: the front of the chest, the shoulder girdle and the upper back. Many of us suffer from chronic tension in the upper back, neck and chest which does not seem to resolve through regular asana practice. Often our attempts to open the thoracic spine merely result in pushing the heart and spine forward and pinching the shoulder blades together. When the chest is opened in this way it creates imbalance in the shoulder girdle, compression in the lumbar spine, and a feeling of defense rather than true openness. By finding an easeful relationship between the inner contents of the chest and the outer musculoskeletal container, we can discover a sense of calm yet open presence. When there is a balanced relationship between the “down bucket” of the ribcage and the “up bucket” of the pelvic the abdominal wall is activated creating a reliable trellis of support for the spine and for the internal organs.

The morning class will include an evocative anatomical Powerpoint presentation designed to help participants access a deeper sense of both the container (musculoskeletal frame) and the contents (organs) of the chest. Both morning and afternoon sessions will involve somatic movement inquiry, dyad work and asana practice. We will complete the day with a Yoga Nidra which focuses on the internal organs.
